Segue abaixo a entrevista exclusiva com Marc Ostrick, produtor da webserie chamada Lockout, que mostrava algumas bandas iniciantes, sendo uma delas o Hybrid Theory. No final da entrevista confira o vídeo da série.

1- Como você ouviu falar do Linkin Park pela primeira vez?

É uma história estranha. Eu estava produzindo uma série sobre bandas novas chamada LOCKOUT no fim de 1999. Foi uma das primeiras séries em vídeo pra internet. Eu estava no consultório do meu dentista e a assistente dele era bem legal, ficou me perguntando sobre o que eu fazia e a contei sobre o projeto. Ela disse que seu marido também trabalhava no ramo da música e que eu deveria falar com ele. Acontece que o marido dela era Jeff Blue. Juntamo-nos e ele me disse sobre essa nova banda que ele contratou chamada Hybrid Theory. Eu achei o som deles ótimo e ele fez uma introdução para filmá-los pra minha série.

2- Qual foi sua primeira impressão da banda?

Minha primeira impressão foi de que esses caras ensaiavam como se fosse um show de verdade. Eles estavam em um local péssimo em Hollywood e ensaiavam loucamente como se estivessem trabalhando no seu primeiro álbum. A performance era muito intensa e com certeza eles estavam levando aquilo ali a sério. Eles treinavam duro e eram apaixonados pelo seu som.

3- Por que você os escolheu para a serie Lockout?

Jeff me mostrou o EP e eu achei que eles tinham potencial.

4- Por quanto tempo você ficou com o Linkin Park? (Alguma chance de uma data específica?)

Foi no fim de 1999. E nós ficamos cerca de 5 horas juntos.

5- Quantos minutos ou quantas horas você tem de gravação do Linkin Park?

Tenho cerca de 2.5 horas de material bruto.

6- Onde os ensaios e entrevistam foram feitos e quando, você se lembra?

Era um Lockout (espaço de ensaio) bem ruim na Hollywood Blvd. & Ivar no coração de Hollywood. Estacionar era impossível porque iriam te cobrar ou te guinchar caso você ficasse por uns minutos que fosse onde estavam as placas.

7- Você tem alguma história interessante sobre a banda (além das que estão no documentário)?

Eu peguei um ticket de estacionamento e eles me disseram que estavam gastando todo o adiantamento das gravações em tickets de estacionamento. Eles se sentiram mal por eu ter pegado um, aí fizemos um vídeo e eles fingiram que eles tinham pegado o ticket e não eu. Foi divertido, depois fomos comer algo e conversamos sobre música e filmes. Eles eram ótimos rapazes, lutando para pagar as contas. Mas estavam determinados a conseguir, e assim o fizeram.

8- Lockout tem uma música bem antiga do Linkin Park chamada “Slip”, que era desconhecida entre os fãs até que a banda a lançou em 2011. Você gravou alguma outra música além das presentes no documentário? Se sim, você se lembra dos nomes?

Talvez tenha umas duas, mas não me lembro, desculpe-me.

9- Recentemente o Linkin Park participou de um episódio de The Ride, da MTV. Eles usaram alguma das suas gravações. Você já assistiu? Foi um episódio ótimo.

Eu vi faz pouco tempo e vi umas gravações no começo. Acho que estou na metade. Eles usaram mais alguma gravação minha? Parece que vou ter que dar uma palavrinha com o pessoal responsável. Obrigado pela dica. 🙂

10- Tem alguma foto sua com a banda que você poderia mostrar aos fãs?

Eu só tenho o que está no vídeo. Antigamente era diferente. Quem iria saber que eles iriam se tornar enormes e tão rápido… Talvez eles soubessem.

11- Você já foi a algum show do Linkin Park depois que eles ficaram famosos? O que você acha deles atualmente? Novas gravações, etc…

Eu os vi ao vivo duas vezes, ambas em espaços enormes. Eles foram fantásticos e estão realmente determinados a fazer músicas que sejam atuais e relevantes aos fãs. É ótimo ver como eles criaram uma base tão forte de fãs e uma comunidade em volta da música deles. Estou muito contente que eles continuaram juntos e se esforçando para fazer uma ótima música.

Interview with Marc Ostrick, producer of the webseries Lockout.

1 – How did you first heard about Linkin Park?

It’s an odd story. I was making a series on breaking bands called LOCKOUT at the end of 1999. It was one of the first ever video series for the Internet. While at the dentist office, there was a very nice dental assistant who was asking me what I was working on and I told her about this project. She said her husband was in the music business and I should speak with him. It turns out that her husband was Jeff Blue. We got together and he told me about a new band he just signed called Hybrid Theory. I thought they had a great sound and he made an introduction to film them for my series.

2 – What was your first impression of the band?

My first impression was that these guys rehearsed like it was a real show. They were in a shitty little lockout space in Hollywood and they were just bouncing off the walls as they worked on songs for their first album. Lot’s of intensity while performing and they definitely were taking what they were doing seriously. They practiced hard and were passionate about their music.

3 – Why did you choose them for the Lockout series?

Jeff Blue played me their EP and I thought they had a great sound.

4 – For how long did you follow Linkin Park? (any chance of the specific period?)

It was the end of 1999. And we spent about 5 hours together.

5 – How many minutes/hours of Linkin Park footage do you have?

I have about 2.5 hours worth of raw footage.

6 – Where did the rehearsal/interviews take place and the date, do you remember it?

It was a crappy Lockout (rehearsal space) on Hollywood Blvd. & Ivar in the heart of Hollywood. Parking was a bitch cause they would ticket or tow you if you were a few minutes over the whatever the signs read.

7 – Do you have any interesting stories about the band (other than the ones in the documentary)?

I got a ticket on my car and they told me about how they were spending all of their record advance on parking tickets. They felt bad that I got a ticket and we filmed it and pretended like they got the ticket instead of me. It was a fun bit and then we all got a bite to eat and talked about music and movies. They were all good guys, struggling to pay bills. But they were determined to make it. And they did.

8 – Lockout features a really old Linkin Park song called “Slip” which was unknown to fans until the band finally released it in 2011. Did you record any other songs besides the ones shown in the documentary?

There may be a couple.

If you did, any chance you know their titles?

I don’t, sorry.

9 – Linkin Park was recently featured in a episode of MTV’s The Ride. They used some of your footage. Have you watched it yet? It was a great episode.

I just watched it and saw my footage in the beginning. I am about half way through. Did they use any more of my footage? Looks like I will be speaking with their clearance people. Thanks for the tip.

10 – Are there any pictures of your time with the band you could release to the fans?

I just have what’s on the video. It was a different time back then. Who know that they would become so huge so fast… Maybe they did.

11 – Have you been to any Linkin Park concert after the band got famous? What do you think about them now a days? New record, etc…

I’ve seen them twice live, both at big venues. They were fantastic and I think they really have been determined to make music that is current and relevant to their fans. It’s great to see that they really created such a strong fan base and community around their music. I am really happy that they stuck together and kept pushing themselves to make great music.
